MOSS : Keeping metadata while copying/moving items

From the Sharepoint Helpdesk comes this post about how to keep your metadata while you want to copy or move items/documents across your sites/lists. The keyfactor here is the use Manage Content Structure link in the site adminstration page! In short, this is the Explorer view but then webbased ;)

So thanks Stephen! I had some difficulty with moving items around when a list became corrupted and I wanted to move all the items while the metadata was preserved, this is just what I needed back then ;)

I tried moving an item from one folder to another folder (at same level) within the same custom list and it failed with error.

"Attempt to move url(s): http://abc2k3:33414/Lists/MyCustomList/location/6_.000; failed. Please try again"

Where as moving the same item from one custom list to another works, but not in the same list.

Any ideas?

In case of explaining the error no.. but to solve the issue .. yes! :)

Try using the Explorer View or using Sharepoint Designer, then the metadata will not be lost since you are navigating in the same list.

So this method is the only one people know of to keep the metadata while moving cross-site? I get the same error tarun does, but unfortunately since I'm not working in the same list, using Explorer or SPD drops the metadata...

Are the columns in both lists the same?

is Manage Content Structure a plugin or something you need to activate because I can't seem to find it anywhere under "site Settings" for my toplevel site. I have full control over my sites and the administration console. Any Ideas?

I tried this and it worked, however it did not move over ALL the columns - hmm? Anyway around that?

Which columns didn't move then? Are the metadata in both the columns the same?
